The new 2,000sqm store offers a state of the art shopping experience, featuring everything locals need to do a full shop, including a fresh food hall with butcher and bakery, a sit-down café offering breakfast and lunch, juice bar, charcuterie and cheese fromagerie wall. Along with a unique community feel and range of local, fresh and unique products that are the hallmarks of Roz and Michael’s existing stores.
According to Roz the new store has something for everyone. “The new store is filled with old favourites, new products and exclusive lines not seen elsewhere. In keeping with our local first mentality our Locavore Food Program has been rolled out across the store and we continue to support local producers and suppliers wherever possible.”
A locavore is a person who chooses to consume food that is grown, raised, or produced locally, usually within 200km from home. With a desire to support other local families, Roz and Michael’s locavore program extends beyond food with many local contractors and providers enlisted to help build the store, including $1.3 million of locally sourced refrigeration supplied by Advanced Refrigeration Technology based at Warana, Sunshine Coast.
The grand opening on the 28th August saw fantastic offers and deep discounts available in store. Local producers sampled their wares and customers had the opportunity to hear from plant-based educator and raw food Chef Sally Douglas, free from foodie guru Tania Hubbard, visiting accredited Dietician Kristie Pieters and 4 Ingredients Kim McCosker who prepared quick and easy meal ideas with fresh, local and on sale products. Customers could also sign up to the White’s Supa IGA Rewards Program to go into a draw to win a BBQ.
The store itself is visually spectacular, featuring a 22-metre piece of bespoke artwork that mirrors the people, places and uniqueness of the Sunshine Coast. Baringa means ‘little mountain’ or summit by local traditional owners which inspired subtle aspects in the store design as a mark of respect for this history and background.
“We are so happy to be opening the new store and can’t wait to meet all the locals,” said Roz. “It isn’t very often that you have the opportunity or privilege of putting down the very first supermarket in a brand-new community precinct. We are part of the birth of a new community and we get to be a part of that community at a grass roots level right from the beginning very exciting.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack was there to help officially open the new store.
“I am a proud supporter of IGA supermarkets because they are locally-owned, locally operated and stock good local food,” Mr McCormack said.
“Small businesses are the beating heart of the Australian economy. The Liberal and Nationals Government is backing small businesses such as White’s Supa IGA, to invest, employ more workers and grow their business because when small businesses are healthy, all Australians are better off.”
